What is MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction)?
It is an 8-week course, held in a group setting, with teacher-guided instruction of formal and informal mindfulness practices in order to cultivate awareness of the ways that the mind and body connect for health and well-being.
Participants learn through experiential exercises (body scan, sitting, breathing, gentle yoga, walking, eating, communication) and discussion about how to bring mindful awareness to daily life.
This new understanding through the practices often leads to reduced stress, improved relationships, and beneficial health results from attention to self-care. This program was founded in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in the US.
What is Mindfulness?
“Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose,
in the present moment, non-judgmentally” - Jon Kabat-Zinn

Instructor: Cathy Ziengs
Cathy Ziengs is a CFM Qualified MBSR Teacher, trained by the UMASS Center for Mindfulness Oasis Institute. She has been engaged in mindfulness applications for health and education for 14 years.
Initially, she began meditation practices to manage her own stress from having diabetes, and that led to such improvements in her overall health that she explored more about mindfulness, science and the impacts on well-being. Based on personal experience of successfully managing chronic health issues, she guides others in coping with stress and finding their own improvements in mental and physical well-being.
While raising a son in the competitive atmosphere in Hong Kong, she recognized the negative impacts of stress in the school community on student learning, parent engagement and expectations on faculty to deliver superior academic results. Thus, Cathy expanded her mindfulness training to include student curriculums and courses for educators. Research studies from the UK and US indicate that mindfulness training for students and teachers helps alleviate stress, improve concentration (students), prevents job burnout (teachers) and improves well-being in the classrooms.
Additionally, Cathy has created custom mindfulness workshops for companies and currently is an advisor on the development of a new corporate mindfulness program to be trialed next year. Many busy working professionals attend MBSR courses to alleviate stress and seek healthier balance in their lives through mindfulness training.
